While rescue operations were underway, looking for survivors and sifting through the debris - a local small-time channel came up with an unusual idea of stealing the limelight. Nestled between the wreckage was the ‘Bhagavad Gita’ (holy book of the Hindus). Ok, it was found — so what? And then what now?
The reporter very passionately spoke about what a miracle this was and even went on to flip the pages and prove that the book was in good condition, except for a minor burns here and there. My first thought and feeling were of anger and disappointment in the whole coverage. There, lying in unrecognizable conditions, were the bodies of people who had not an ounce of clue that they boarded the flight — not to fly overseas, but the flight to death.
It is such a shame to even consider this as a main point to talk about. The saddest part of it was when he mentioned that this is the power of God. Really? Only one person survived while 200-plus people lost their lives. The flight also took down people who were on their lunch break in a hostel that housed medical students. I see neither power nor divine intervention in this situation.
The holy book came unscathed and unaffected in spite of the massive destruction. Couldn’t it have been the other way around now? And here's the uncomfortable question: what if it had been a ‘Bible’ or ‘Quran’ found intact now? Would it have received the same attention? Would it be treated with the same reverence? Sadly, I doubt it.
Bringing a religious aspect to this event is such a deplorable and shameful act. While we are progressing on one side and trying to be humane and be in our best behaviors, there will be media on the other side of things that’ll try to speculate and make a mountain out of an ant house.
But I still believe people are sane to a greater extent and will be prudent in their actions and decisions. It will be a while for us — as a nation, as people, as human beings — to overcome this painful reality and move on with heavy hearts after such a tragic loss.
I hope the families of the victims are able to find peace and comfort as time goes by.
